YOU PUT IN A SHIFT: Coach Tony DiCicco and the Rise of U.S. Women's Soccer

Soccer fans need no introduction to the legacy of Tony DiCicco. To everyone else he was the coach of the U.S. Women's Soccer Team that electrified and united Americans when his team captured the World Cup in 1999. When Tony died on June 19, 2017, soccer fans around the world paused for a moment of silence.

In the spring of 2017, author Rob Goldman was conducting a series of in-depth interviews with Tony DiCicco. During their conversations a friendship developed, and when Tony passed away mid-way through their discussions, Rob felt compelled to finish what they had started.

Tony's eldest son, Anthony, was eager to carry the torch. He agreed his father's story and the inside story of the U.S. Women's National Team were worth telling and signed on as author of the book. It is told from his point of view. When Tony's former players Julie Foudy, Kristine Lilly, and Brandi Chastain heard about the project, they were also eager to take part and offer their opinions from th e players' perspective. These soccer icons have huge followings on television and social media, and they are keen to help spread the word when the time comes to promote the book. Anthony is also well known in soccer circles, and with his extensive ties, he will be instrumental in raising awareness.

Before Tony DiCicco, women's soccer was a blip on the radar. Today it's a worldwide phenomenon. His teams not only benefited women athletes but women everywhere were inspired by their skill and sovereignty. Not only did the iconic "99ers" battle Norway and Germany on the pitch, they also fought cultural biases, nay-sayers, and critics. They became role models to legions of women and girls, and benchmarks for equality. The 99ers and Tony helped shape society for the better. This is their story told through Tony and his son Anthony's eyes and the players who were there.The National Team blazed a trail not only for women athletes but for women fighting for equality and soci al change.

A complete ms of approximately 90,000 words can be delivered by Dec. 15 of this year. Target pub date can be late Spring 2020 to coincide with the Summer Olympics.
