Bishop Diego Soccer Beaten in CIF Regionals, 1-0

By Barry Punzal, Noozhawk Sports Editor | @NoozhawkSports | February 26, 2019 | 9:14 p.m.

Bishop Diego's history-making boys soccer season came to an end in a 1-0 loss at La Puente in the CIF State Regionals.

La Puente scored the game winner in the 78th minute.

"La Puente is a very good team and the boys knew they would need to play 80 full minutes, at their highest level, to compete," said Bishop coach Mick Luckhurst.

The Cardinals nearly scored in the first two minutes as Jack Luckurst collected a long throw from Luke Williams but was denied a goal by a good save fron the La Puente goalkeeper.

Michael Romero and Williams pushed up into the attack and created a couple of opportunities for Adam Luckhurst, which were both saved by the La Puente goalkeeper.

Bishop's defense of Steven Romero, Chris Mesipam, Daniel Giannini, Brendan Carlyle, Michael Romero and Williams "covered every inch of the field magnificently," said coach Luckhurst. "Peter Robbins, Alex Marchand and Harry Powers spotted for each other throughout the game and played significant roles."

The Cardinals didn't have freshman attack Michael Luckhurst, who was serving a one-game suspension for picking up two yellow cards in the CIF-Southern Section semifinal loss to San Dimas.

"So much went against this team, yet they stayed focused and dedicated," coach Luckhurst said. "These boys have set the standard for every future Bishop player. They will be the measure of what Bishop soccer feels and looks like. This teams legacy will live within every future Bishop soccer team.

"I am honored to have been a part of their journey. If they apply this same drive and spirit to life, we will be reading about their successes, and their children's,  long into the future. In so many ways, what a truly great and meaningful season this was."

Soccer: FIFA to re-examine transfer rules for minors - Infantino

ROME (Reuters) - FIFA president Gianni Infantino said on Wednesday that football's governing body will consider changing the rules over the transfer of minors after Premier League Chelsea were hit with a transfer ban.

Chelsea were banned last week from signing anyone in the next two transfer windows after being found guilty of breaching FIFA's rules relating to signing overseas players under the age of 18.

FIFA's rules say players aged 18 or under can only be transferred abroad if one of three criteria are met: if their parents emigrated for non-footballing reasons, both clubs are in the EU or European Economic Area and the player is aged between 16 and 18 or the player lives within 100km of the new club.

Clubs like Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid have also received transfer bans in recent years after falling foul of the rules and Infantino, speaking at a news conference in Rome, said the regulations should be subjected to renewed scrutiny.

"There are rules, regulations, whether we like them or not they have to be respected as long as they are there," he said.

"Otherwise if we don't like them we need to change them... Maybe we should raise the minimum age all over Europe, or we should allow certain exceptions based on certain clear criteria, for young boys or girls to be able to have good training conditions in other parts, but protecting the minors.

"This is our main priority so it is certainly an area that we have to look into and continue looking into in the future as well."

Infantino, who was elected in February 2016, also said that FIFA intends to review regulations over the activity of football agents.

"We are planning to revisit the regulations governing agents because we feel it's necessary to fine-tune those rules," he said.

"Today the economic flow involved in transfers is about 8 billion euros ($9.10 billion) a year without considering the money paid to the footballers.

"So I think it would only be fair for those involved in these transfers to be regulated, their profession clearly needs to be governed. All other professions are governed and disciplined in Italy and throughout the world so why not them?"

Infantino said agents were subjected to tighter rules in the United States.

"Look at what happens in the USA. Often the USA is taken as an example but the USA is the homeland of the free market of laissez-faire. Everything is open, people do whatever they want. But these professions are regulated in a very stringent way.

"You've got huge volumes and books that govern transfers and changes in clubs and agents. We've got these slim booklets here in Europe and in FIFA so we've got a bit of work to do.

"We are talking about this with everyone – with clubs, leagues, federations and football players and agents. Hopefully this year we'll be able to propose measures to further regulate this activity to protect everyone: footballers, clubs and agents themselves."

Liga MX Review: Chivas make a Clasico statement, Gignac again showcases his brilliance

Chivas make statement in Clasico Tapatio

The 2019 Clausura season initially kicked off with more questions than answers for Chivas. Under the unexciting leadership of manager Jose Cardozo, it was difficult to predict what the league giants would look like after making significant roster changes over the winter. Although there was potential for progress through some of the new faces -- notably Hiram Mier, Dieter Villalpando, Jesus Molina and Alexis Vega -- there were no guarantees of immediate success in a rebuilding period for the roster.

The recent failure in the FIFA Club World Cup didn't help either. In short: Chivas embarrassed themselves on the world stage last December as after a 3-2 loss in their debut match against Japan's Kashima Antlers, Los Rojiblancos then slumped to a defeat to Tunisia's Esperance de Tunis via penalties in the 5th-place game.

Chivas fans were desperate for good news in the post-Matias Almeyda era of the club. Luckily for supporters, the team hasn't needed much time in 2019 to gel with Chivas off to promising start to the Clausura. Recently a struggling squad that hasn't finished in the top eight in the last three seasons, there is now reason to have hope in a Chivas side that is happily sitting in 4th place.

  • When Boca Juniors and River Plate were set to meet in Argentina's most important match, Buenos Aires lost its mind, writes Wright Thompson.

  • For those who still had any doubts surrounding the team's improvements, Los Rojiblancos all but silenced their detractors during last Saturday's 3-0 victory over Atlas in the Clasico Tapatio. Vega was brilliant with his hat trick, Isaac Brizuela had an exceptional evening with two assists, and the midfield duo of Jesus Molina and Villalpando were superb in helping maintain Chivas' momentum.

It wasn't as if Atlas was an easy opponent either. The crosstown rivals have had a revival of their own in early 2019 thanks to standout players such as Juan Vigon, Osvaldo Martinez and Jesus Isijara. Before kickoff, Los Zorros were sitting in the top eight themselves at 6th in the league table.

Now, Chivas have distanced themselves further from their rivals and are only three points behind first-placed Monterrey. There's still plenty of time left before Los Rojiblancos clinch a spot in the playoffs, but at the very least, a 3-0 win in one of their biggest games of the season does plenty to highlight that Cardozo and his men are headed in the right direction.

By the way, if you're looking for further proof that things are improving, that 3-0 result is Chivas' largest margin of victory in their last 53 Liga MX home games.

    Take note of...

    - The Clasico Tapatio wasn't the only rivalry match of the weekend. On Sunday, Pumas snuck past Club America with a 1-0 win at home in the Clasico Capitalino. Club America currently has a game in hand, but it's still a bit surprising to see the current title-holders at 11th in the league table.

    - Dominated by Leon in a 3-0 away loss on Saturday, Toluca has now gone five consecutive matches without a win That's likely good news for MLS' Sporting Kansas City, who are set to face Los Diablos Rojos in the CONCACAF Champions League this Thursday.

    - Another week, another three points for the two Nuevo Leon teams. Despite the fact that Monterrey and Tigres had some surprising defensive issues in their separate 3-2 victories, both Liga MX powerhouses held onto their places in the top two with wins.

    - Club Tijuana is quickly picking up momentum. After a 3-0 victory at home against Veracruz, Xolos have now moved up to 8th place in the standings. The addition of attacking reinforcements and the return of Gustavo Bou appears to have significantly helped new manager Oscar Pareja in his first Liga MX season.

    - Little by little, Cruz Azul is starting to drop points with each passing week. On Saturday, last season's finalists looked listless at home in a 2-1 loss to Santos Laguna. Is it too early to call this a crisis for the Mexican City side that currently sits 14th?

Player of the Week: Alexis Vega

It has to be Vega. Thanks to his hat trick against Atlas, Chivas earned what could be their most important result of the regular season.

Not bad for a young Mexican striker who had yet to score a single goal for Los Rojiblancos prior. Perhaps that call-up to the national camp a few days beforehand helped his confidence...

    Team of the Week

Alexis Vega's hat trick earned him Player of the Week honors and a spot on ESPN FC's Liga MX Team of the Week. ESPN FC

Goal of the week: Andre-Pierre Gignac

Is it possible to have two people share this award? Week 7 provided us with world-class golazos from Tigres' Andre-Pierre Gignac and Monterrey's Rogelio Funes Mori. It's tough to select one over the other, and in spite of angering some Monterrey fans who were blessed to see the long-range effort from Funes Mori, this week's prize has to go to Gignac for the audacity to pull off his back-heel attempt.

Coach's corral: The Queretaro tenure of Rafa Puente Jr. has come to an end

It was only a matter of time. After starting the season off with seven straight losses, Queretaro announced on Sunday evening that Rafa Puente Jr. would no longer be in charge of the club. A playoff contender in late 2018, Los Gallos Blancos are now a shadow of their former Liguilla selves.

At time of writing, Jose "Chepo" de la Torre is rumored to be the replacement.

    Other Superlative: Goals galore

There were 29 goals scored in nine games during Week 7, more than any other Liga MX weekend in the Clausura tournament so far. This follows the noteworthy 26-goal tally from Week 6. Led by high-scoring teams such as Monterrey, Tigres, Leon and Necaxa -- and some questionable defending from squads like Queretaro and Atlas -- there seems to be no lack of goals in the league this season.

Theater Review: Kicky ‘The Soccer Player in the Closet’ from Nothing Without a Company

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly versionE-mail page to friendE-mail page to friendPDF versionPDF version

CHICAGO – Connecting to the theater collective Nothing Without a Company means a couple of things. One, you may visit parts of Chicago you've never seen before – in this case a plant store in an industrial area south of Humboldt Park – and two, you will see some daring and outside-the-box stagings. "The Soccer Player in the Closet" is their latest production – a World Premiere – and it provides what the title implies and beyond. The play runs through March 17th, 2019. Click here for more details, including ticket information.

The loft above a plant shop is the setting, and the audience sits within what is the title character's apartment. The vibe is odd as the play commences, with the occupation and motivations of the main character not entirely clear. Once those explanations come, the story works on a couple levels, and is delivered by a diverse and talented cast. Ryan Oliveira, the author of the play, has a notion of how life emits a difficult rhythm when a human being is off the rails, and that it is spread to all the fellow travelers surrounding them … it's a vivid 90 minute visit to his headspace. The director Christopher Sylvie uses the ensemble cast and their setting effectively and symbolically.

Cristiano (Rolando Serrano) is a avid soccer player … not physical soccer, but online "eSoccer" … so much so that he is has cleaned up in prize money, before hitting a depression wall and refusing to leave his apartment. This perplexes his high school aged cousin Cobi (Julian Serna), who Cristiano is helping to get to college. Cobi's sister Milena (Viviana Uribe) is begging the recluse to get outside, even to date an online soccer opponent named Bastian (Alex Roggow). An external force intervenes as his landlord and sister Leona (Amelia Bethel) announces that she is selling her plant store and the apartment he occupies.

Cristiano's presence inside the apartment is all encompassing, and gives the premise two levels in which it inhabits… sometimes action takes place in flashback, and other times the present eats away at the characters. The mystery lies in the character of Cristiano, and Rolando Serrano delivers him with a passion and enigma that keeps the other characters on their toes. His life as a gamer and online critic is fascinating as well. It both motivates his actions and builds the barrier that prevents him from living with normalcy.

The whole cast is in the moment with the situation, and most of the laughs that come out it are their reaction to the absurdity of a "thing that won't leave" and the type of "job" he has. Bastian is the most cunning in this way, as he master manipulates both Cobi and Cristiano when he needs to. Alex Roggow has a good time with the character, both in physical seduction and the mental gymnastics with the crew. While not personified as a villain, his my-way-or-the-highway personality is an effective crowbar in opening up Oliviera's script.

Amelia Bethel's Leona and Viviana Uribe's Milena are a mini comedy team in the story, constantly relying on arcade rituals to understand the situation ("I've got many more that I've found on the internet," says Leona). They are the ones most trying to get to the roots of Cristiano's refusal to leave, and their characterizations actually hit pay dirt by the time the conclusion takes place.

So it's a good outing to visit this fictional loft space above a plant store… which is an ACTUAL loft space above a plant store. Leave it to the adventurous Nothing Without a Company to find the "lit" in literal.

Nothing Without a Company presents "The Soccer Player in the Closet," Thursday-Sundays at 7pm through March 17th, 2019, at Christy Webber Farm and Garden (2nd Floor), 2833 West Chicago Avenue, Chicago. A Review Of 2019 MLS Uniform Changes: Western Conference

Every team in Major League soccer wears at least a primary and secondary kit on separate two-year cycles. This means that each team will have at least one new uniform a season. As such, each MLS team has unveiled its new kit during the offseason and this is both a review and a recap of the changes that have taken place before the 2019 season kicks off. For coverage of the Eastern Conference, click here.

    Colorado Rapids

In what has become a running theme for 2019, the Rapids have unveiled a white secondary jersey. The inspiration behind this design actually makes a bit of sense, since it's easy to associate Colorado with snow white conditions. It's a nice shirt but it's hardly a unique look when it comes to the landscape of identities across MLS.

    FC Dallas

See? I wasn't joking about white jerseys becoming a major trend in MLS. Once again, it's understandable to see FC Dallas go down this rout as white is one of their main colors and there's still a bit of red-and-blue on the shirt. Still, it's a bit disappointing to see them go with a relatively plain look. It's especially disappointing to see the club continue to stray further from their identity of wearing horizontal hoops.

    Houston Dynamo

© Houston Dynamo / Major League Soccer

Our first burst of color in the Western Conference comes from the Houston Dynamo and if you like orange, then you are going to get all you can handle and then some from Houston with this look. The Dynamo normally wear white shorts with orange shirts so it's definitely a bit of a twist to see them wearing all-orange from head-to-toe. This has been dubbed the "Energy Kit" and it's safe to say that this is enough orange to bring a jolt of electricity to any match that they play in. Houston also has a new sponsor for 2019, as MD Anderson Cancer Center will serve as the team's shirt sponsor after the Dynamo spent a season without having a shirt sponsor.

    LA Galaxy

The Galaxy have had an interesting offseason when it comes to their jerseys. Their "Night Navy" kit isn't the best look in the world, as it brings back memories of the extremely busy shirts from the early-to-mid 1990s. What's interesting is that the Galaxy have gone back to wearing five championship stars on their jersey, which is a bit of a departure from the MLS championship star protocol that was announced ahead of the 2016 season. The Galaxy are now wearing what was previously the standard for a five-time champion who had just won their fifth title. Instead, it appears that one gold star and four silver stars is just normal for five-time MLS Cup winners.

The Galaxy will sport one gold star included in their five championship stars© LA Galaxy

    LAFC

The good news is that LAFC will be changing their away kit for 2019, which is nice since their inaugural home shirt (aside from the sponsor logo) was great. The bad news is that means that their equally-solid away kit is being thrown to the wayside after just one season and it's being replaced by a white kit that is quite boring. That's really saying something when you consider all of the white jerseys that have been unveiled this season.

    Minnesota United

Hey look, it's another white jersey. Again, it makes sense that a team located in Minnesota would use snow as a motif for one of their jerseys. Minnesota's saving grace is their shade of blue being a very distinctive design element, even when it's utilized as a trim color. Either way, it's a decent look on its own merit but a bit disappointing if you want something that sticks out from the rest of the crowd.

    Portland Timbers

The Timbers will be sporting two shades of green on the pitch this season. Portland will be wearing sublimated hoops that mix what's being called "Ponderosa Green" and "Green Night" together to form a shirt that's unique and perfectly suited to the Timbers. They'll have the option of wearing green shorts or white shorts with the look but they can't go wrong with either choice.

    Real Salt Lake

RSL not only went with a white jersey, they also chose to jump onto the trend of teams going with a "Glitch" look. As such, Real Salt Lake definitely doesn't have the most boring white jersey out there. It's actually intriguing to see them focus on red-and-white with only a tiny bit of blue on the entirety of the shirt.

    San Jose Earthquakes

After spending the past couple of seasons with one of the most unique looks that have been worn during the history of MLS (much less during those past two seasons alone), the Quakes have gone back to a look that could be described as simple and plain. That's not necessarily a bad thing but it's surely going to give their fans a bit of aesthetic whiplash to go from the wild look of 2017-2018 to what they're going to be wearing at home for the next two seasons. As of right now, the Earthquakes will not have a shirt sponsor, so that only makes the plainness of this jersey even more glaring.

    Seattle Sounders

The Sounders will have a new shirt sponsor for 2019 as Zulily's logo will be emblazoned across the center of Seattle's shirts. This goes for the NWSL's Seattle Reign as well, as the two clubs will share a shirt sponsorship. Seattle's home look will remain the same for 2019 but their secondary shirt is going to be the very definition of a clash kit. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that you're going to be hard-pressed to find another black-and-hot pink look in MLS (at least until Inter Miami FC enters the league), so Seattle definitely earns points when it comes to having a unique and inspired design.

    Sporting Kansas City

SKC has already been on the forefront of fashion and this new look for their home games is no exception to that particular rule. So it shouldn't come as a shock that SKC has firmly planted themselves on the front seat of the "Glitch" fad. Fortunately, they didn't do this with a white jersey and instead used it to supplement their lovely shade of blue. Sporting Kansas City rarely puts a foot wrong when it comes to their shirt designs and this year is no different.

    Vancouver Whitecaps

    © Vancouver Whitecaps FC

Here we have proof that white jerseys can still be exciting. The Whitecaps went back to their roots with a white jersey that is clearly inspired by the city's days of being involved in the NASL. This is a look that dates back to 1979 to be exact, which is when the Whitecaps won Soccer Bowl '79 to become NASL champions. It's tough to say that they'll repeat that feat from 40 years ago but they'll at least have the look of a champion.

Council approves affordable housing program, decides to call election on 'soccer' petition

AUSTIN, Texas (FOX 7 Austin) - This past November, voters approved $250 million in bond money for affordable housing. On Thursday, council passed an item intended to help make the most out of that money. Anyone in Austin whose ever tried to build anything will know, there's a lot of red tape to get through -- a thick rulebook.

Council Member Greg Casar introduced a resolution called "Affordability Unlocked" that will remove some of those barriers when it comes to building affordable housing.

A residential development will have to prove eligible for the housing program.

Casar says the initiative will increase the number of affordable homes in Austin by up to 500% in some locations. Mike Gerber, the CEO of Austin's Housing Authority says they don't want to negate Austin's well-defined construction process but there are challenges.

"A slow process for site reviews, for permits, parking requirements, compatibility requirements.  These are all things that are important but the combination of them can slow down development and can also raise costs," Gerber said.

Gerber says Council Member Casar's resolution will streamline that process.

Also, related to Austin's Major League Soccer stadium deal: There was a petition drive intended to make sure voters get a say anytime a sports or recreational facility is going to built on city-owned land.

The 29,000-signature petition was turned in by a group called "Friends of McKalla Place" and validated. Council could adopt what the group wanted or put it on the ballot.

Obviously they didn't adopt it and the Mayor says they'll call an election at a later date.

Even though the "Friends of McKalla" group feels differently, the Mayor emphasized this election won't have anything to do with the McKalla deal because the city has already entered into the lease.

But the Mayor and Council Member Casar claim it's a bad policy that could affect other venues in the future. "The Zach Scott Theatre, The Millennium Center...even the YMCA center on Rundberg Lane in my district.  So at best the whole thing is a frustrating waste of hundreds of thousands of city dollars and at worst it's a corporate power play that could come at great expense to Austinites," Casar said.

I asked Marisa Perryman with Friends of McKalla Place if they were hoping this would affect the McKalla deal:  "We were hoping, yes and there's still hope.  I don't agree with some of the statements the Mayor said today.  I think there is still hope with that.  I think he was a little misleading," Perryman said. The City Clerk says the special election will cost around $500,000.

No Inquiry Into Stajcic Sacking-FFA's Gallop

SYDNEY — Football Federation Australia (FFA) boss David Gallop said on Thursday there will be no inquiry into the shock dismissal of Alen Stajcic as coach of the Australian women's soccer team.

Stajcic was sacked last month after a meeting with Gallop, with the governing body citing a "poor culture" around the team for his removal, which followed an internal survey of players and staff and a supplementary review by a women's rights group.

Ante Milicic was confirmed on Monday as the new coach for the Matildas and selected his first squad on Thursday for a six-team Cup of Nations tournament in Australia as they prepare for the June 7-July 7 Women's World Cup in France.

Gallop, appearing with Milicic at the squad announcement in Brisbane, said the FFA would not conduct a review of Stajcic's sacking.

"The board has said they have made a decision," Gallop said.

"There won't be a review of the decision.

"You don't take a decision to change coaches unless you've got good reason."

The FFA has come under fire over Stajcic's removal, with the former coach saying his reputation had been ruined by the decision and calling for an investigation.

Local media have also raised question marks over Gallop's position.

"This has been particularly difficult. I acknowledge that ... (but) I'm fully committed to the role," he said.

"Week-in, week-out you are in a position where what you do is reviewed. We're all used to that."

Milicic told reporters that while the sacking had created some upheavals for the team, he was confident the players would be ready for the World Cup .

"I've done my research, I've spoken to people part of the staff previous and currently," said Milicic, who was an assistant coach for the men's team at their last two World Cups.

"I've been around Australian sporting teams for a while now and I know what the environment needs to be.

"I know how we need to prepare for a World Cup. I will use all the experience that I've gained over the years and I've got no doubt at all that once we start working from Saturday onwards, that well be so focussed on this World Cup, well block out anything from the outside.

"There will be no issues here. The focus will be on the football."

    Importance of Soccer cleat reviews

    By: Dave Nash | February 21, 2019

It is now universal truth that online presence is of great importance to your business as the good and services you offer. People buy and sell more products online than they sell in the actual stores. Online product reviews have become the best way to tell the legit business, the best products to buy, negative qualities of the product and many other traits. People take reviews from strangers the same way they take recommendations from friend and family.

It has always been a challenge in the sporting arena to find the best football cleats to play with, But with almost two-thirds of the world having access to the internet. Football players and fans have opened up and written the soccer cleats reviews for different soccer cleats to enable you to choose the right one. Soccer cleat reviews help both the professional and unprofessional players to have knowledge of the soccer cleats even before they can buy them. All the soccer cleats reviews published either positive or negative are according to how the consumer feels about the soccer cleat he or she has bought. Soccer cleats companies have also benefited from the soccer cleats reviews has it has helped them to know what is working and what they should improve when designing the next football cleats.

Vacaville High boys soccer team forfeits playoff game due to ineligible player

On Feb. 12, the Vacaville High boys soccer team was scheduled to play Bella Vista of Fair Oaks in a Sac-Joaquin Section Division II playoff game.

But that day, according to Jennifer Leonard, public information officer for the Vacaville Unified School District, the Will C. Wood athletic department informed the Vacaville High athletic department that one of the Vacaville players had been ineligible because of age the entire season. Vacaville High confirmed the player's ineligibility and immediately informed the league as well as the section office.

As a result, the school forfeited the playoff game as well as every win or tie in which the player participated.

According to MaxPreps.com, the team had seven wins and three ties.

"The student enrolled as a freshman at Vacaville High School from another country," said Leonard, "and we do not require proof of citizenship and some other documents. So that was … us just missing that he was older when he enrolled as a freshman coming from another country."

Leonard says that to her knowledge this has never happened before at Vacaville High.

"The accidental oversight has caused the school to put better reviews and screenings of all requirements in place prior to the beginning of any sport season," she added.

The section by-law 203 states: "A student whose 19th birthday is attained prior to June 15 shall not participate or practice on any team in the following school year."

The student in question is 20 years old. He was 19 prior to June 15, 2018, so he was eligible for all the games he participated in in the 2017-18 season. But he was 20 prior to June 15, 2019.

"We didn't know of his ineligibility," said Vacaville High coach Al Arevelo. "As a coach, we receive a roster of cleared players and that's what we roll with. There is no date of birth on rosters."

Arevalo says that the player did not know he was ineligible.

"He feels bad, obviously. But he didn't know," Arevalo said. "I told him, you didn't (knowingly) break any rules because you didn't know. And I didn't know. You're on my roster that says cleared player."

Arevalo said that after he was notified that his team couldn't participate that afternoon, the coaching staff met with the team to debrief the players.

"We used it as a teaching moment on … how do you move forward from something like this in a productive way versus just pointing fingers, because that could have been easily done, "he said. "I just wanted to make sure that the players were appropriately addressed and informed, and that process was taken care of, which the administration did a stellar job in doing that."

Arevalo added, "The kids are a great group of kids, the way they handled it… The manner they did that shows the maturity of the players and their ability to come together as a team… I just feel bad for the players and the seniors."

Spokane Park Board approves Bacon Concrete bid for Southeast Sports Complex upgrades

The Spokane Park Board awarded bids last week for a $1.1 million upgrade of the Southeast Sports Complex at Altamont Street and 46th Avenue on the South Hill, its biggest upgrade to a city park property in years, aside from the renovations underway at Riverfront Park.

The groundbreaking should take place this spring, said landscape architect Nick Hamod, hopefully in March. The Bacon Concrete Inc. was awarded the construction project.

"It's a little snowy right now," he said. "Let's hope for a sunny and warm spring."

Work has been underway to convert three softball fields into multipurpose sports fields. The backstops were removed and an old restroom was taken out. New sod and irrigation will be put in this spring, Hamod said.

"When soccer starts, it should all be ready to go," he said.

The northwest corner of the site will become the home of a new playground. The city is trying a new playground surface that will provide a safe spot for kids to land while they play. It's a rubberized surface that will be poured in place, Hamod said.

"You can roll a wheelchair on it," he said. "It's way easier for us to maintain."

The playground will include a play structure for children ages 2-5 and a second play structure for ages 5-12. "Both of those have accessible features on them," he said.

A swingset is also going in. Hamod said swingsets are increasingly being left out of parks and playgrounds because of liability and injury concerns, but said he's confident in the safety provided by the new rubber safety surface.

"The kids love them," he said of the swings.

New restrooms are being built, and there will be a picnic shelter for people seeking shade or a spot to have lunch. Other play features include spin cups and a climbing boulder.

Public meetings were held with surrounding Southgate Neighborhood residents to get input on the playground features, Hamod said. The original plans called for a splash pad, but that will not happen this year, he said.

"Because we had to reconstruct 46th Avenue, we couldn't afford a splash pad," he said.

However, water piping for a future splash pad will be installed during construction so the city can easily add one later without digging up the park again, Hamod said. "We're planning for it in the future," he said.

The planned road work includes paving 46th from Cook Street to Altamont Street. It includes curbs, swales, street trees and a sidewalk.

Southgate Neighborhood Council chairwoman Rita Conner said the neighborhood is thrilled with the upgrades, and she likes that the playground will be handicap accessible.

"It's going to be a beautiful upgrade," she said. "They gave us several designs to choose from. Everything about it is just going to be super plus."

She said the addition of the playground and other upgrades will open up the sports complex to other users. "It's going to be a boost to the neighborhood," she said. "We're noted for our parks, and this is just another gemstone."

The neighborhood is also happy to see the unpaved section of 46th get paved, she said.

"It will provide some on-street parking," she said. "It will give a lot of easy access to the playground and the soccer fields."

A new trail is going in along the west side of the complex between 46th and 49th avenues. There are plans to extend the trail to the east in additional phases as money becomes available, Hamod said.

"There will be a new neighborhood trail," he said. "That's something the neighborhood has really been interested in."

The city has received $750,000 in grants to help pay for the $1.1 million project. Hamod said construction on 46th and the playground will start about three to four weeks after work begins on the play fields. The fields are expected to be finished by May 1 and the playground should be complete by the end of July.

Care will be taken to stop work on the 46th Avenue project during sporting events so people will be able to access parking, Hamod said.

The city is looking forward to having a playground at the site, Hamod said.

"We're excited," he said. "It's a cool feature."

YOU PUT IN A SHIFT: Coach Tony DiCicco and the Rise of U.S. Women's Soccer

Soccer fans need no introduction to the legacy of Tony DiCicco. To everyone else he was the coach of the U.S. Women's Soccer Team that electrified and united Americans when his team captured the World Cup in 1999. When Tony died on June 19, 2017, soccer fans around the world paused for a moment of silence.

In the spring of 2017, author Rob Goldman was conducting a series of in-depth interviews with Tony DiCicco. During their conversations a friendship developed, and when Tony passed away mid-way through their discussions, Rob felt compelled to finish what they had started.

Tony's eldest son, Anthony, was eager to carry the torch. He agreed his father's story and the inside story of the U.S. Women's National Team were worth telling and signed on as author of the book. It is told from his point of view. When Tony's former players Julie Foudy, Kristine Lilly, and Brandi Chastain heard about the project, they were also eager to take part and offer their opinions from th e players' perspective. These soccer icons have huge followings on television and social media, and they are keen to help spread the word when the time comes to promote the book. Anthony is also well known in soccer circles, and with his extensive ties, he will be instrumental in raising awareness.

Before Tony DiCicco, women's soccer was a blip on the radar. Today it's a worldwide phenomenon. His teams not only benefited women athletes but women everywhere were inspired by their skill and sovereignty. Not only did the iconic "99ers" battle Norway and Germany on the pitch, they also fought cultural biases, nay-sayers, and critics. They became role models to legions of women and girls, and benchmarks for equality. The 99ers and Tony helped shape society for the better. This is their story told through Tony and his son Anthony's eyes and the players who were there. The National Team blazed a trail not only for women athletes but for women fighting for equality and soci al change.

Review: OSU Theatre Presents Riveting The Wolves

  • The OSU Department of Theatre presents Sarah DeLappe's Pulitzer-finalist The Wolves in a raw, stripped-down, and switchblade-sharp production directed by Elizabeth Wellman, opening this weekend.

The Wolves follows the eponymous soccer team, part of a U17 girls' indoor league for the latter half of their season. Each scene takes place before or after a week's game. The play understands that life happens between the dramatic, explosive moments. Its characters are at the age that sinks in and they begin to emerge from their chrysalises.

Wellman and her cast use the visual impact of the team falling into patterns and exercises to drive home how much of life, purpose and the hope of ever finding your success or nurturing talent comes down to time, repetition, and learning to work with others. All in a way I've never witnessed in a play before.

(Left to right) Mehek Sheikh as #14, Malina Ronét Ransom as #00, and Vayda Good as #7.

The play sets a dark look at men and boys in their lives against an intricate, spider-web passing drill. Half of a scene uses an almost cartoonish set-piece of various running drills, "high knees" and "butt kicks," off and back on the set.

This dazzling, but never too virtuosic, physicality, helps set the tone for DeLappe's sense of naturalism with its contrast turned up so high it reveals the real strangeness of the human heart. Every tricky overlapping dialogue or whiplash switch between narrative devices, the cast, to a person, returns with finesse and spins designed to make the most of the text's surprises.

Those surprises and delights are landmines throughout the 90 minute runtime, with nothing wasted but plenty of breathing room. The cast smartly embodies the ensemble energy that makes their team undefeated but also the frissons and fissures inherent to any group of 17-year-olds. An antic and funny riff on the Khmer Rouge led by #11 (Betsy Huggins), that turns into a vital discussion on ethical complexity, is a highlight.

(Left to right) Mehek Sheikh as #14, Vayda Good as #7, and Malina Ronét Ransom as #00.

Olivia Sawatzki's new kid in town, #46, strikes the perfect balance of wanting to fit in where the character's strangeness isn't "cute" and her skills avoid sitcom ugly duckling tropes. As things she said earlier come back as plot points, the blood of every audience member who identified with the larger group that ignored the "weirdo" until that person is "useful," should chill. That performance peaks in a jaw-dropping breakdown and the reckoning after.

Vayda Good's wrenching #7, especially in moments where she and Mehek Sheikh's #14 play the foil to one another, is impossible to ignore, a sandpaper performance that takes grime off even the most jaded eyes. Cindy Tran Nguyen's #25, the captain, balances that grown-up-too-fast adult-proxy with lightness and hope.

Those are highlights that stood out to me but there isn't a bad performance or a bum note struck throughout this riveting gut-punch of The Wolves. Elizabeth Wellman and her cast have given us an ideal production of one of the most important plays of the last five years

The Wolves runs through Feb. 24 with performances at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday. For tickets and more info, visit theatre.osu.edu/events/wolves.

Zimbabwe: Znssa Plead for Review of Cosafa Cup Decision

    Photo: COSAFA

Zimbabwe national team celebrates 6th COSAFA Cup trophy (file photo).

    By Petros Kausiyo

ZIMBABWE National Soccer Supporters Association's leadership have pleaded with Government to reverse its decision not to guarantee ZIFA's bid to host the 2019 COSAFA Cup this year.

Eddie "Mboma" Nyatanga, the ZNSSA leader, said there had been a huge outcry from their members after revelations the country will not host the tournament.

The government, citing short notice given to underwrite the staging of the competition, announced on Monday they could not guarantee ZIFA's bid to host Southern Africa's flagship soccer tournament.

COSAFA had wanted to stage their biggest tournament, in history, this year from May 19 to June 1.

Zimbabwe last hosted the tournament in 2009.

Nyatanga said the majority of football fans had been disappointed at losing the opportunity of watching their Warriors in action at home with ZIFA having wanted to use their best players, in the event the country qualified for the 2019 AFCON finals.

Nyatanga said he would lead an appeal to the Government for a possible change of stance by the Ministry of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation.

"We are very disappointed to hear about the decision related to the COSAFA Cup. As soccer supporters we believe this was going to be a perfect platform for our Government to showcase the Warriors, for two weeks, in front of their own fans, it was a perfect platform to help the Warriors cement their bond with all Zimbabweans.

"Football has the power to unite people and we believe that these Warriors have the capacity to unite the people by being the host team in the COSAFA Cup.

"This tournament also presents us with a chance to showcase our hospitality, as a nation, when all those countries bring their senior teams here," Nyatanga said.

The ZNSSA leader said it was inconceivable that a nation that hosted the Barcelona Legends could not host the COSAFA Cup.

"These Warriors are our real heroes. But we have seen a lot of money being splashed to bring the Barcelona Legends, a grouping of retired footballers, and yet we cannot do the same for our Warriors," said Nyatanga.

"I am personally going to engage Government, on behalf of the supporters, and ask that the position be reviewed and that, as a nation, we mobilise resources to host that tournament in May."

Warriors cheerleader, Chris "Romario" Musekiwa, also felt staging of the tournament in Zimbabwe would not just benefit ZIFA and the Warriors but the country as a whole.

"This kind of tournament is a big opportunity to put the country on the map. When you host such tournaments, all the focus in African football will be on this country and we can showcase our culture, our tourism sites and everything Zimbabwean," he said.

In announcing the government position Youth Sport, Arts and Recreation Minister Kirsty Coventry said they felt the country was not being given enough time to prepare a classy event as requested by COSAFA.

According to Coventry, the country was still open to hosting the event in the future.

"We have had some deliberations this morning and we needed to come to the media and the country and let you know of some of the outcomes.

"The main discussions were on and around the hosting of the COSAFA tournament and it's been agreed that at this time the deal was not just very good for the country or for ZIFA.

"So, we will not be hosting the COSAFA games this year. But we look forward to having adequate time to be able to host a world class event in the near future.

"We want to make sure that when we do host an event of this magnitude that we are fully prepared, we have good timing. We just don't feel that was given to us this time around," Coventry said.

    City plans for its future

The Edmond City Council discussed priorities this week for both the 2019-20 year and the Five Year Financial Plan. Assistant City Manager Steve Commons updated the status of prioritized task force recommendations for funding projects.

“Our next big project is the widening of Covell Parkway to four lanes from Fairfax to Griffin. It will go out to bid some time this calendar year,” Commons said.

The estimated construction cost is $6,865,674. This project will be totally funded by the city.

Construction will involve left turn lanes set at all side streets. Roadway construction is anticipated to begin in the fall, according to the city.

Bid documents are under preparation for improvements at Caplinger Baseball Fields at Hafer Park. The public wants nicer facilities with shade, better concession and restroom facilities.

The city is responding to retain Edmond’s competitive edge among communities. Better facilities will also attract visitors to Edmond and contribute to city sales tax revenue.

“Common areas where people can wait between games. Those are all the kind of things you’ll see when we give you the final plans on the Caplinger Ball Fields â€" the same thing when we get the final plans on the soccer complex.”

Completion of Edmond Tennis Center at 601 W. 15th Street is expected during the early summer 2020. The City of Edmond and Edmond Public Schools are splitting the $15.1 million cost for the project.

The city’s tennis capacity will increase from the 11 indoor courts and three indoor courts at the KickingBird Tennis Center, to 24 outdoor and six indoor at the Tennis Center, Mayor Elizabeth Waner said. Additional indoor courts will be added during Phase 2 at an unspecified date.

Downtown revitalization includes the near completion of the downtown drainage project and increased parking stalls. Projects also are in the works for streetscaping the 1934 historic Stephenson Park with pedestrian friendly venues and other improvements, Commons said.

The city is aware of its need to acquire large parcels of land for additional parks. Another location is needed for a second splash pad. Commons said the challenge is finding a second use/water use for conservation purposes.

The city has also been working on a railroad Quiet Zone that would be constructed throughout the BNSF rail lined in Edmond. Quiet Zones are meant to diminish disruptive noise from passing trains.

“Quiet Zone is a big project. But I want to point out that is for the whole community. It’s not just about downtown,” Commons said.

City Manager Larry Stevens said the city recently received the cost estimates from the railroad that it has needed for 15 months.

“Our people are now moving forward with their review, so is our consultant for this project which is CTS,” Stevens said. “They are also checking the information, and once the numbers have been verified and the consultant agrees that everything is included, we will present a recommendation to you.”

Additionally, Commons said the joint performing arts center project between the city and the University of Central Oklahoma has been delayed.

“It has not necessarily gone away or anything. It is just not the right time for them to pursue it. For us, we’ve got our plate fairly full for projects,” Commons said. “We basically have postponed its consideration for a few years to get a little bit further down the road with the tax.”

Neither is there a timeline set for a downtown parking garage, Commons said. And discussions for a new library have been postponed because of a directorship change at the library. The city plans to meet with the new director for continued conversations.

A project to make Citylink bus stops more accessible is being done with the addition of new benches, but additional work has been required on this project, as well.

Commons said, “I don’t think we realized how many new sidewalks needed to be repaired so people could get good, safe access to those.”

The Spin: Axelrod on Chicago mayor's race | Setback for Obama Presidential Center | Pritzker signs minimum wage hike

In a blow to Obama Presidential Center backers, a federal court judge has just given the green light to a lawsuit challenging Chicago's Jackson Park location.

With a week to go until Chicago's mayoral election, I asked David Axelrod, a longtime Democratic consultant who's now running the University of Chicago's Institute of Politics, to read the tea leaves and tell us what to expect. Like other experts, he doesn't think any one candidate will win more than 50 percent of the vote to take the mayor's office next week. Rather, he thinks, the two top vote-getters will face each other in an April 2 runoff. His bet? Toni Preckwinkle likely will secure one of the two spots.

And as Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed a bill raising the state's minimum wage into law Tuesday morning, his administration also was undertaking a review of the Aurora shooting, including the acknowledgment that the state wrongly issued the shooter a gun permit five years ago.

    Welcome to The Spin.

Axelrod predicts runoff between Preckwinkle and … someone else

    Jose M. Osorio/Chicago Tribune 2018

      (Jose M. Osorio/Chicago Tribune 2018)

David Axelrod says the ripple effect of a federal investigation at City Hall has been one of the central issues in the mayor's race. He's picking Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle to secure one of the two runoff spots thanks to name recognition and endorsements from the powerful Chicago Teachers Union and the Service Employees Union International.

Preckwinkle factor: "I think Preckwinkle started with some advantages and she still has some advantages, but she's been damaged in the process," he said, referring to the federal attempted extortion charge lodged against Ald. Edward Burke. Among other things, the longtime alderman allegedly solicited a donation for Preckwinkle out of someone trying to do business in his ward. Preckwinkle has not been accused of wrongdoing and has maintained she was not aware of the solicitation.

Second spot? Axelrod says Bill Daley, who like Axelrod served in the Obama White House, and Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza both have an excellent shot of advancing. But he said he can't count out former federal prosecutor Lori Lightfoot, City Hall veteran Gery Chico and millionaire philanthropist Willie Wilson.

"We don't know what the Chance the Rapper effect will be on Amara Enyia," he says of the public policy consultant. And he adds: "The thing about this race, all the margins and polling you've seen, no outcome would be surprising other than Neal Sales-Griffin being in the runoff," he said of a candidate who's been virtually invisible, rarely showing up to candidate forums and holding little to no press events.

What to expect Feb. 26: Who makes it into the runoff may not even be determined on election day, especially those candidates who are ahead by a few hundred votes, he says. Absentee votes — specifically those postmarked on election day but don't arrive until a few days after — in this case could decide or at least cement who's in and who's out.

The number: Axelrod says that the top two vote-getters must remember that a majority of voters went with someone else.

Runoff debate: Axelrod says he's so certain of a runoff in the mayor's race that his Institute of Politics has scheduled a March 13 debate for the two mayoral finalists to discuss violence and crime in the city. Some high-profile panelists will question the candidates, including Liz Dozier, a former Chicago Public Schools principal and founder and CEO of Chicago Beyond; Charles Ramsey, one-time deputy superintendent at the Chicago Police Department and the former police commissioner of Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.; and Alex Kotlowitz, journalist, author and documentarian.

Side note: He's not working for any of the candidates, though he said he counts "several of them as friends."

Susana Mendoza's career propelled by alliances with old-school Democrats, opportunity

    Jose M. Osorio/Chicago Tribune 2018

      (Jose M. Osorio/Chicago Tribune 2018)

From the Tribune's Ray Long and Rick Pearson: "Susana Mendoza's TV ads in the mayor's race focus on her personal story: a skilled soccer player who overcame gender bias to play with the boys after her family fled Little Village's crime for the safety of the suburbs. Mendoza's political story is a little more Chicago conventional: Her steady ascension has been helped in part by forming alliances with a variety of old-school Democratic establishment figures, and in some cases breaking those ties when it was beneficial to her career." Read the story here.

In a final televised debate, Mendoza comes out swinging. Read Bill Ruthhart and Gregory Pratt's piece in the Tribune here.

Federal judge deals setback to Obama Presidential Center plan

    Nam Y. Huh/AP 2017

      (Nam Y. Huh/AP 2017)

From the Tribune's Lolly Bowean: "In a major setback to plans to build the Obama Presidential Center on Chicago's South Side lakefront, a federal judge ruled Tuesday that a lawsuit challenging its location can proceed. The ruling to allow the suit to proceed is significant because it could delay construction for months, if not years, and potentially raise the question of whether the $500 million sprawling presidential campus can even be built on lakefront property in Jackson Park." Read more about the judge's decision here.

State police wrongly issued gun license to Aurora killer

    Armando L. Sanchez/Chicago Tribune

      (Armando L. Sanchez/Chicago Tribune)

From the Tribune's Stacy St. Clair: "Illinois State Police acknowledged Monday that the agency wrongly issued a gun license to the shooter in the Aurora warehouse murders, but in a detailed statement the agency also suggested that the Aurora Police Department may have failed to do its part to ensure the man no longer owned a weapon." Read the story, including what authorities did — and may not have done — after learning he wasn't eligible for a gun license, here.

Background: The gunman lied in his January 2014 application about his criminal history, and that, along with a second background check, failed to turn up a felony conviction for aggravated assault in Mississippi . Months later — after he had purchased the gun he would end up using in last week's shooting — he applied for a state concealed carry license, and that screening turned up the conviction. That would set in motion a call for him to turn over the gun.
